Snow Make Up Schedule

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will be in session April 3 to make up the instructional time lost during last week's snowstorm. Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence has decided to waive the three remaining snow days for students by using time built into the 183-day school calendar.

The makeup plan is as follows:

  • April 3 (originally designated a staff day) will be a makeup day for Feb. 17
  • Feb. 18-20 will not be made up by students; employees will make up the lost time

Since joining the division, Spence has gathered input on makeup day possibilities. He held in-depth conversations with division staff, School Board members, the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council, parent associations and a variety of teachers, parents and students. A recurring theme of the feedback gathered was the stress inherent in missing instructional time and the constraints of the options available to the division in the school year calendar.

"It is clear that we must always give priority to honoring instructional time, but we must also recognize and address the stress these kinds of extreme events and calendar changes place on our community," Spence said. "I believe this plan strikes a balance between ensuring our students get maximum time in the classroom and recognizing the flexibility a 183-day calendar provides."

Should additional days be missed in the 2014-2015 school year due to inclement weather, time will be made up by adding minutes to the school day and/or by extending the school year. State law requires school divisions to provide instruction for a minimum of 180 days or 990 hours each school year.
