Introduction
How would you get to school if there were no such thing as a wheel and an axle? There would be no buses, cars, trucks, or bicycles. How would you walk up the stairs without an incline plane? Simple machines make our lives more simple! Let's learn more about simple machines and how they help to make our workloads just a little bit lighter.
Task
In this WebQuest you will research and identify examples of 3 different simple machines that we use everyday. You and your partner(s) will work together to:
(1) Complete a chart which includes the three different types of simple machines, what it does, and examples of how we use this kind of simple machine today.
(2) Use this information to create a new compound machine that would be helpful to you. It needs to be able to help you do some kind of work. You will draw a draft of this machine with the different parts labeled.
(3) Create a poster from your draft to market your compound machine to your classmates. This poster should have a model of your machine and focus on the usefulness of your machine and the simple machines labeled. You will present this poster as a group to your classmates to help them learn about the simple machines you researched.

Process
1. You and a partners will use the Internet resources above to locate the names of the three types of simple machines and how these machines work. Record this information on the Simple Machines Chart.
2. How do these simple machines make life much easier? Your job is to locate examples of how we use each type of simple machine to make life easier. Record this information on your table
3. Now it's your turn to be an scientist! Using the information your have collected, create a brand new machine which uses at least three simple machines. Label the different simple machines your new invention uses. How does this machine make work easier for the user?
4. Create a poster to sell your invention to your classmates. Be sure to include a picture of your machine and label the types of simple machines that make up your new machine. Also include why this machine is so great...how would it improve life for the user.

Design a machine made up of two or more simple machines. |
Invention uses only 1 simple machine in its design. Does not solve a problem. |
Invention uses the same type of machine more then once. Machine does not solve a problem. |
Invention uses 3 or more different types of machines. Machine solves a problem. |
Invention uses a variety of simple machines. Machine solves a problem. |
Create a poster that markets your new machine. |
Poster is poorly illustrated. Does not have the machine showcased. Simple machines are not identified. Contains more then 5 grammatical and/or spelling errors. |

Conclusion
In this WebQuest you have researched and learned what simple machines are and found examples of how they are used to help us everyday. You have also learned how simple machines can be combined to work together to make compound machines. Working as a scientist you have created a way to do some work thus making your life easier by inventing a new compound machine.
Remember man had to invent these simple machines to make life easier. How do you think early man lived without even the simplest machines? What effect would this have on your life today?
