Mission Statement

The mission of Virginia Beach City Public Schools, in partnership with our entire community, is to ensure that each student is empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenges of the future.

Salem Elementary School Mission Statement
The faculty and staff of Salem Elementary are committed to providing a student-centered and success-oriented educational program. In partnership with parents and the community we are dedicated to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. We will endeavor to provide all students with skills necessary to become productive citizens of the future.

Our Beliefs
1. We can develop the desire for knowledge within every student, and every student can learn.
2. Students need to be recognized as individuals with unique needs.
3. Students should be provided a safe environment conducive to effective and meaningful learning.
4. School, staff, parents, and community members share in the responsibility to ensure that our students will become productive citizens.
5. Students should be able to use current technology in order to succeed in today's world.

Absence Procedures
When students fail to report to school, the school is required by law to make a reasonable effort to notify the parent or guardian. We need your assistance in this matter.
Through the following procedures, we will be able to provide greater safety for your children:
· If you know in advance that a student will be absent, please send a note to the teacher indicating the date and reason.
· If time does not permit you to send a note in advance, please telephone the school at 471-5810 to notify us.
· During school hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), notify the school secretary; please give your name, the student's name, the teacher's name, and the reason for the absence.
· After school hours (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.), notify the school by leaving a message on the telephone answering machine; please give your name, the student's name, the teacher's name, and the date and reason for the absence.
· In the event that a student is absent and you have not notified us, we will telephone you at home or at work to notify you of the absence.
· Excessive absences may greatly affect a student's instructional progress and could be a factor in a student's retention in the same grade during the next school year.
