About Our School
The History of Salem Elementary
Salem Elementary School opened its doors in September 1988 with grades K-6. The entire faculty and staff from North Landing Elementary School transferred over to open our brand new school. The enrollment was 1140 students at that time.
Salem ES was so overcrowded when it opened that the entire sixth grade was housed in the gym until portables were assembled three weeks later. Dr. Andrew Carrington was our first building principal and Mrs. Nancy Midgett was our assistant principal.
Our official mascot is the Ram, which was brought over with us from the North Landing days. Dr. Carrington actually had a real ram brought to Salem for pictures one day. It took quite awhile to convince the ram to walk into our courtyard for a photo shoot.
Salem ES continued to burst at the seams! In January 1992 half of our faculty moved to the new Landstown Elementary School, along with half of our students. It was a sad, but exciting time.
Over the years we have celebrated marriages, births, Talent Shows, holidays, end of the years, awards, and SOL successes. There are five faculty members with us from the first year. We are truly a family.
2009 marks Salem’s 21st anniversary. Under the leadership of Janet Zitt, principal and Paula Dale, assistant principal we continue to succeed. Salem now houses grades K-5. There is also an Early Discoveries on site for four year old pre-school students.
Plan for Continous Improvement (PCI)
Every school in the Virginia Beach City Public School system routinely examines itself to see where improvement is needed. All faculty and staff participate in this process and the end result is each school's Plan for Continuous Improvement. We make available to our community a summary of this plan as a PDF file. Please contact the school office if you have any questions or comments on this plan. You will need the freeware application Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print the plan.
